7 Causes of hair loss in children

GladChild: Hair loss is a common problem faced not just by adults but also children. An estimated 3 percent of children suffering from hair loss. This problem must be solved before the kids go bald.

Hair loss in children is not that trivial. However, if a known cause and resolved immediately, premature baldness can be prevented immediately.

Here are some conditions that can cause hair loss in children, as reported by Lifemojo on Monday October 10, 2011:

1. Tinea capitis
Tinea capitis or fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss. This condition is a form of ringworm that causes scaly skin on the scalp. The doctor usually will suggest pathological tests and to prescribe medications and anti-fungal shampoo. In addition it is necessary also to avoid the spread of fungi, such as avoiding child to share books, toys or clothing.

2. Alopecia Areata
This condition occurs naturally and is not contagious. Is usually characterized by round or oval spherical shape that appears on the scalp. This condition can lead to damaged hair follicles making hair fall out. There is no specific form of treatment to prevent entirely, but with proper medication can prevent developing more severe Alopecia Areata.

3. Trichotillomania
In this condition, hair loss is caused because the kids like to pull, pulling, rubbing or twisting of hair. This is due to the psychological condition of children. Children who suffer from stress have a greater chance of getting this condition. Counseling and appropriate treatment can help children get out of stressful situations.

4. Telogen effluvium (severe stress or depression)
When children suffer severe stress or depression such as loss of parents, grandparents, then it can cause severe injury to hair loss. The situation of depression leads to mental stress in children. High fever and surgery may also be other reasons for hair loss. Changes can cause baldness either partially or completely bald. There was no specific test to diagnose this condition. Having children out of stressful situations, hair growth will return to normal and this generally takes about a year or more.

5. Malnutrition
Babies who are suffering from malnutrition have a greater chance to lose hair. Biotin or vitamin H deficiency and zinc deficiency can cause hair loss and disruption of cell metabolism. Excessive intake of vitamin A also can be one cause of hair loss in children.

6. Hypothyroidism
Children who suffer from hypothyroidism may also suffer hair loss. When the thyroid gland is not active, it could result in metabolic activity does not irregular. Blood tests can be done to diagnose this condition.

7. Too often tying the hair
Too much brushing, tying or pulling hairs can cause hair damage can even lead to hair loss in children.
