The benefits of playing outside for children

GladChild: Playing is one of the advantages of being a child. But when parents increasingly worried about the future and their children's education, children play time is reduced drastically compared to some decades ago.

These trends have serious impact to the development of children and mental health.

In the 1950's, children are free play. If the kids just stay home, mother would say 'go out and play'. A natural place for the kids are outside the home, said Peter Gray, professor study psychology at Boston College, as quoted from HealthDay on Friday September 23, 2011.

Today the opposite is true, parents do not allow children to play freely. Even if the kids do it anyway, no other kids out there to play with. Or the mother may limit the child, such as should not be out of the pages. In fact, the kids want to play out, continued Gray.

When the children were allowed to play, they make the game, negotiate the rules and make sure other people play fair. All of that helped teach how to make decisions, solve problems and control yourself.

Children who have too many emotional outbursts or obtrude stubborn need to change their behavior if you want to remain integrated in the group.

With the free game, they acquire the basic competencies needed to become an adult. But since the mid-1950s, the adults also determine children's activities at the expense of the mental health of her children, said Gray, author of two new studies published recently in the American Journal of Play.

Research shows children today are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, feelings of helplessness, and narcissism. All of which coincided with the decline of play activities and increasing parental monitoring and regulation of activities of the children by their parents.

For boys, the game is rough and often causes the fall to help teach emotion regulation, said Peter LaFreniere, professor of developmental psychology at the University of Maine.

Boys learn that if they wanted to keep his friends, they should not let it go too far or hurt other children. These skills will help boys grow into men who were able to control aggression and anger, he said.

Although a growing number of experts who voiced the importance of playing against mental and physical health of children, but the amount of play time children stay decreased significantly.

Gray cites a survey with a representative sample of parents nationwide who keep track of children's activities in 1981 and 1997. The researchers found that children aged 6 to 8 years in 1997 to play 25 percent less than children in 1981.

Another study about ten years ago to ask 830 people compares the U.S. capital when their children play with their own playing time when he was a child. About 70 percent of mothers reported that they often play outside when still a child. But only 31 percent who said that their own children to do the same.

So what causes the children should remain in the house? According to the survey, the biggest reason is because of fear of abduction, followed by fears the children will be hit by a car and is plagued by bad kids.

Their fear has created an overly protective parents and raising children are timid and unable to cope with the ups and downs of life because they do not have the experience," says Hara Estroff Marano, author of 'A Nation of WIMPs: The High Cost of Invasive Parenting' of New York.

A survey found that 89 percent of children prefer to play outside with my friends than watching TV.

Parents should remember that childhood only once, and do not let the kids miss it for granted. Mixed with other children with uncontrolled manner not only fun but also a natural part of the plan, said LaFreniere.
